The Budget Plane That Leaks Poison Fuames
Air crews are refusing to fly on a range of passenger jets which they claim leak poisonous fumes into the cabin. The boycott comes after two stewardesses collapsed on a flight and all seven crew members had to be taken to hospital. In another incident, staff had to use oxygen masks and abort the flight after 15 minutes on the same route, from Birmingham to Belfast.Staff at the budget airline Flybe says lives are being put at risk on its fleet of BAE 146s, the type of plane which is also used by the RAF's Royal Squadron to fly the Queen. There have been ten leaks of noxious fumes into cabins in the last 15 months, it is claimed.Poisonous fumes can potentially leak into the cabin of all planes because of the way air is filtered through the engines. As commercial flights cruise at high altitude where the air is thin, the cabin needs a supply of air to stay at the correct pressure. Some of the air sucked in by the engines is siphoned off to pressurize the cabin. But this so-called 'bleed air' can include toxic particles if it is contaminated with oil from the engine. The Cigarette That's Legal Indoors
"e-cig" is a Chinese-made device that mimics the ritual of smoking but is claimed to be entirely legal indoors. The six-inch white plastic stick uses a battery-powered atomiser to create realistic puffs of "smoke," while the tip glows red with each suck. The smoker even gets a strong kick of nicotine from “nico-filter" cartridge. Its manufacturer, the Golden Dragon Group, say the invention has no harmful side-effects because there is no smoke or tar.Source: DailyMailTags:

Save the World – Eat A Kangaroo marsupial?
Aussies are being encouraged to eat greener and tuck into more of their native kangaroos marsupials to save the environment.Greenpeace believe that if more of Australia swapped red meat for the bouncing marsupials, land clearing could be reduced and methane gas emissions could be significantly lowered.Dr Mark Diesendorf said reducing beef consumption by 20 per cent and putting bouncing wildlife on the dinner plate instead would cut 15 megatonnes of greenhouses gases from the atmosphere by 2020."Kangaroos do not emit greenhouse gases. They are not hooved animals either so they don't damage the soil," Dr Diesendorf said.Source: CourierMail & Homes World WideTags:

Man Had a Coca-Cola Tattoo without Realizing It for 26 Years
The tattoo on the left actually translate to Watsons (a chain of stores that sell health and beauty products). Not sure what's going on here...From The Sun:
Proud Vince Mattingley showed off his Chinese writing tattoo spelling his name for 26 years – until someone pointed out if actually spelt Coca-Cola.Vince, 44, had the body art done after asking staff at his favourite Oriental restaurant to write his name in Chinese symbols. But a cheeky waiter drew the Coke words – and Vince had it etched on his chest.Vince – who now works as a tattoo artist – never knew he was a walking advert for more than a quarter of a century. It was only when he travelled to Thailand this year that a barman asked him why he had Coca-Cola written on his chest.Vince, of Watford, said: “I thought it was a joke then I found out that’s what it said. The restaurant staff must have had a good laugh about it.” He is now getting another Oriental tattoo to cover up the name of his favourite soft drink, left. He added: “I’m going to go with something Japanese this time.”Source:

Kidnapped Dog Reunited With Owners
A kidnapped German Shepherd has been returned to its elderly owners in Bogota, days after a police sting operation thwarted payment of a $350,000 ransom.Capt. Wilfredo Vasquez, spokesman for the police's elite "Gaula" anti-kidnapping unit, said the dog's owners refused to discuss the case, but described them as a wealthy, retired couple. "They lived alone and loved the dog like it was a child," said Vasquez. The four-year-old purebred was taken hostage on Sept. 18, when kidnappers broke into the couple's house, subdued the dog with a tranquilizer and lugged it away in a bag, Vasquez said.Hours later, the captors called the couple to tell them that Aldo would be mutilated unless they forked over $350,000. They also received photos of the dog bound in chains, along with a tape recording of the warning, "This is how your dog cries at night."When the couple went to pay part of the ransom at a rendezvous point, six undercover agents — trained to rescue people in Colombia, one of the world's kidnapping capitals — were lying in wait.A shootout erupted after the exchange took place, wounding one of the agents and leading to the capture of two of the dog's kidnappers. Aldo was dropped off at the vet's office later the same day, showing signs of starvation, Vasquez said.Video:

Home-Made Helicopters Hit Northern Nigeria
Mubarak Muhammad Abdullahi, a 24-year-old physics undergraduate in northern Nigeria, takes old cars and motorbikes to pieces in the back yard at home and builds his own helicopters from the parts."It took me eight months to build this one," he said, sweat pouring from his forehead as he filled the radiator of the banana yellow four-seater which he now parks in the grounds of his university. The chopper, which has flown briefly on six occasions, is made from scrap aluminium. It is powered by a second-hand 133 horsepower Honda Civic car engine and kitted out with seats from an old Toyota saloon car. Its other parts come from the carcass of a Boeing 747 which crashed near Kano some years ago.For a four-seater it is a big aircraft, measuring twelve metres (39 feet) long, seven metres high by five wide. It has never attained an altitude of more than seven feet.He said he learned the rudiments of flying a helicopter from the Internet and first got the idea of building one from the films he watches on television. Two more pictures after the jump.Source: Yahoo NewsTags:

Floating Island Made From Recycled Plastic Bottles
Spiral Island was a floating artificial island in a lagoon near Puerto Aventuras, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico south of CancĂșn. It was built by British eco-pioneer Richart (or "Rishi") Sowa beginning in 1998; he filled nets with empty discarded plastic bottles to support a structure of plywood and bamboo, on which he poured sand and planted numerous plants, including mangroves. The island sported a two-story house, a solar oven, a self-composting toilet, and three beaches. He used some 250,000 bottles for the 66ft (20 m) by 54 ft (16 m) structure. The mangroves were planted to help keep the island cool, and some of them rose up to 15 ft (5 m) high.It was destroyed by Hurricane Emily in 2005. In August 2007, Sowa announced that he will rebuild Spiral Island.

The aquarium has 12 coral reef sharks and at least three different kinds of stingrays. Animal rights groups say confining the wild animals is cruel and could put them in danger. Man Steamed Alive For 45 Minutes, Survives the Experience
A medium who claimed that he had been possessed by the Monkey God sat in a covered wok of boiling water and withstood the steam-filled environment for 45 minutes.By the time the extra-tall lid of the wok was removed, the five frozen whole chickens which had been placed in the wok had already been thoroughly cooked. However, not only was the medium unhurt, he even expressed his dissatisfaction in Hokkien, saying that his master had opened the lid too early. The 300 believers who witnessed the sight were amazed. The event (which took place in Ipoh) was officiated by Grandmaster Qingshui from Bahau. He was accompanied by two disciples – Xia Fuan and Xia Fulai. It was 52-year-old Xia Fuan who had sat inside the covered wok of boiling water, braving the scalding steam for 45 minutes.Qingshui said that this skill could be taught to outsiders and even girls. However, to date he has only taught it to the 2 brothers Xia Fuan and Xia Fulai.Source: Kooky via UniqueDailyTags:

Fake Shark Fin 'Delicacy' Made From Pork
A Japanese company is launching fake shark fins in China, hoping to tap a market as prices for real ones rise amid concerns the species is being hunted to extinction.Shark fin is considered one of the highest-end delicacies in Chinese cuisine and also fetches high prices in select Japanese restaurants.Nikko Yuba Seizo Co. a Japanese food-processing company, said it had developed artificial shark fins made out of pork gelatin. But he said the artificial version would also appeal to Chinese who would not be able to afford the real fins, which are served as a luxury at weddings and other important occasions. The price of the gelatin-made fin costs only one-tenth of the real one, or about 1,500 yen (15 dollars) per kilogram when sold wholesale, he said.Source: Yahoo NewsTags:

Postcard from WWII Battlefront Delivered 64 Years Later
A postcard that a Japanese soldier mailed from a Southeast Asian battlefront during World War II has reached a recipient in Japan 64 years later, a university whose student helped deliver it said Saturday.Shizuo Nagano, an 80-year-old retiree, received the card Friday, said a statement from Mukogawa Women's University.Nagano's former colleague at a retail store, Nobuchika Yamashita, mailed the card in 1943 from Burma, now called Myanmar, a year before he died at war at age 23, the university statement said.It said the card had initially failed to reach Nagano's address in Nagasaki and was instead collected there by an American soldier during the U.S. occupation after Japan's 1945 defeat. After the American soldier died, his son gave the letter to a Japanese exchange student."I never would have guessed I could see (Yamashita) again this way. ... I'm overwhelmed," Nagano said as he was handed the postcard by the student.Source: IhtTags:

Beer Bottle Removed From Man's Colon
Nairobi - Doctors in central Kenya have successfully removed an empty half-litre beer bottle from a man's colon, a report said on Friday, but how it got there remains a mystery. The 26-centimetre bottle was removed on Monday from the colon of the 33-year-old man after two operations in a Kiambu District Hospital, about 20 kilometres from the capital."The first operation was not successful, forcing us to perform a second one, which went fine," said the hospital's administrator Patrick Okoth.Although the man, whose identity was not disclosed, said he had pushed the bottle through his rectum, Okoth said it was nearly impossible for the man to have done that by himself."It would have been too painful. He would have had to use a whole length of his arm," Okoth said, adding that the bottle inflicted "no damage at all" in the man's internal organs.Instead, Okoth said the man could have been assaulted by other people but that it was to embarrassing for him accept that.Source: IolTags:

Homeowner Barely Misses Car Smashing Into His House
Michael Del Gaudio couldn't have left for work at a better time.Minutes after the father of three pulled out of the driveway of his home in the 11200 block of Northwest Seventh Street on Friday, an errant driver smashed through Del Gaudio's backyard privacy fence and pool enclosure, went airborne over his hot tub and swimming pool, crashed into a set of glass sliders and plowed through Del Gaudio's house. The silver Suzuki Sidekick came to rest inside the front door. "If anyone was in the path of the vehicle, they would have definitely been killed," said police Sgt. Joe McHugh.Police said Antonia Yabut, 71, of Coral Springs, was eastbound on Atlantic Avenue at about 12:08 p.m. when he apparently hit the accelerator instead of his brake and wound up inside Del Gaudio's $450,000 four-bedroom, two-bathroom house.Yabut, who was cited for failure to use due care, was taken to Coral Springs Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries, McHugh said.Building inspectors declared the house unsafe because of the large amount of damage.Video after the jump.Image Gallery: Nbc6Source: Sun SentinelTags:

Fearing Crime, Japanese Wear the Hiding Place
On a narrow Tokyo street, near a beef bowl restaurant and a pachinko parlor, Aya Tsukioka demonstrated new clothing designs that she hopes will ease Japan’s growing fears of crime.Deftly, Ms. Tsukioka, a 29-year-old experimental fashion designer, lifted a flap on her skirt to reveal a large sheet of cloth printed in bright red with a soft drink logo partly visible. By holding the sheet open and stepping to the side of the road, she showed how a woman walking alone could elude pursuers — by disguising herself as a vending machine. The wearer hides behind the sheet, printed with an actual-size photo of a vending machine. Ms. Tsukioka’s clothing is still in development, but she already has several versions, including one that unfolds from a kimono and a deluxe model with four sides for more complete camouflaging. She also designed the “manhole bag,” a purse that can hide valuables by unfolding to look like a sewer cover. Lay it on the street with your wallet inside, and unwitting thieves are supposed to walk right by.For children, she has a backpack that transforms into a Japanese-style fire hydrant, hiding the child.Ms. Tsukioka said her disguises could be a bit impractical, “especially when your hands are shaking.” Still, she said she hoped the designs or some variation of them could be marketed widely. So far, she said, she has sold about 20 vending-machine skirts for about $800 each, printing and sewing each by hand.More pictures including those of the fire hydrant and manhole bag camouflage after the jump.Source: New York TimesTags:
